Hi there! Oh wait, I need to say that Chicago style, How You Doin’? So you’ve found my page, and you’re curious to know a little more about the person who annoys you so much every morning that you hit the snooze bar 16 times eh? Well, I grew up in and around the South-Side of Chicago area and graduated from North Central College in Naperville in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in broadcast communications. While at North Central, I did a little bit of everything on the award-winning college radio station -- air shifts, assistant music director, assistant program director. My favorite part of college radio was playing music, and turning listeners on to tunes they hadn't heard before. After a year of working odd jobs and slinging pizzas, I moved to the Illinois Valley to take a job in radio. I've been on the air in some shape or form since 2001, and currently host the Morning Show.
The name "Shap" came from high school. Because there were too many Jon's (and John's), friends decided to call me a shortened version of my last name. Over the years, I’ve had various version of the name Shap; Shappy, Happy Shappy, Shapus Maximus, Shap-a-lap-a-ding-dong. Oh, and at one point, I was called “The Encyclopedia of Rock.”
Family: My wonderful wife Kristin and I got married in the fall of ’08. We have 2 cats, Little One, and Pepe Le Pew. Pepe is an adoptee from IVAR. Hear them every Wednesday morning at 8:55 with a new pet of the week! No kids yet….but not a DAY goes by that someone doesn’t ask me when! Someday…someday…The rest of my family lives in the Chicago Suburbs.
Music: I LOVE Pearl Jam! I’ve seen them 14 times over the last 15 years, and probable will see them another 14 times, if Mrs. Shap let’s me! I've lost track of how many concerts I've been to since my first show, at 13, when I saw a triple bill of Warrant, Firehouse & Trixter! I also doodle on the guitar every now and then.
Sports: WHITE SOX FAN! I used to walk to games from my Grandparent’s house when I was a kid. I'm also a HUGE Bears fan...I have a tendency to scream at the TV on Sundays during the fall…doesn’t help that they suck! And I love to wear my Red Indian Head Sweater of the Chicago Blackhawks! There’s no better live sport to see than a professional Hockey Game.
Other useful tidbits: I can kick your butt at trivia on music or movies! Just ask the rest of the staff here at the station!
TV Obsessions: We watch a lot of TV in the Shap house (Amen to the almighty DVR) but the shows that I look forward to most are: Dexter, True Blood, Lost, Big Brother, Amazing Race, Breaking Bad, The Office, Big Bang Theory, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
